STMicroelectronics (ST), a global Semiconductor leader serving multiple Electronic applications, recently launched the world’s first automotive satellite navigation chip that can provide high-quality location data for automotive advanced driving systems.

As a new member of STMicroelectronics’ Teseo V product family, STA8135GA is the world’s first ON-chip GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receiver chip with integrated tri-frequency position measurement engine. In addition, it also integrates standard multi-frequency position-speed-time. (PVT) and dead reckoning function.

Tri-frequency position measurement has traditionally been used for professional-grade equipment that requires millimeter-level positioning accuracy and basically does not require calibration data, such as surveying and mapping instruments and precision agricultural equipment. Previously, the tri-band solutions sold on the market were only chipsets or Modules. Compared with ST’s single-chip solutions, they were larger in size and higher in price. Among the technologies that effectively capture and track multiple navigation constellation satellites at the same time, the tri-band receiver captures and tracks the largest number of satellites, enabling excellent positioning performance in harsh environments, such as maintaining positioning under urban canyons and trees. Accuracy.

Introducing the tri-band receiver into the automotive market through a compact and easy-to-integrate package, the STA8135GA helps the driver assistance system make accurate judgments about the road conditions ahead. The multi-constellation receiver is responsible for providing original position information to the main control system, while the main controller runs precise positioning algorithms, such as PPP/RTK (precise point positioning/real-time motion). In addition, STA8135GA can also improve the performance of other applications, including car navigation systems, telematics equipment, smart antennas and V2X communication systems, ship navigation systems, drones and other vehicles.

The STA8135GA is packaged in a 7mm x 11mm x 1.2mm QFN package. Samples have already been made and fully comply with the AEC-Q100 standard. It is planned to be put into production in the first quarter of 2022.

Technical Description

The STA8135GA also integrates an independent low dropout (LDO) Regulator on-chip to supply power for the IC’s analog Circuit, digital core, and I/O transceiver, thus simplifying the choice of external power supplies. The receiver can track GPS, Glonass, Beidou, Galileo, QZSS and NAVIC/IRNSS navigation and positioning satellites.
