OoklaSpeedtest data shows that 5G millimeter wave speed can reach 16 times that of Sub-6GHz

Qualcomm continues to lead the development of the 5G mmWave ecosystem, helping to provide the world’s fastest 5G connection

San Diego, May 4, 2021 – Qualcomm Technologies announced today that, based ON actual measurements on commercial terminals, 5G mmWave connection rates are 16 times faster than 5G connections based on Sub-6GHz alone. The actual measurement results are based on the spontaneous speed measurement data* provided by U.S. users using commercial terminals provided by Ookla® Speedtest Intelligence®. Compared with low-frequency 4G or 5G frequency bands, 5G mmWave utilizes ultra-wide channels to achieve exponential increases in speed and provide greater capacity. 5G mmWave continues to gain momentum globally. All major operators in the United States and Japan have deployed 5G mmWave, and Europe and Southeast Asia have recently launched 5G mmWave deployments. Countries and regions such as Australia and Latin America will soon follow. Enter. China is also expected to deploy 5G mmWave for the Beijing Winter Olympics early next year.

5G mmWave is critical to dramatically improving network performance and enabling diverse connectivity experiences in a variety of environments. Whether a user is using 5G fixed wireless access at home, streaming TV while walking at a train station, using an enterprise-grade connection in an office or school, or in a crowded area or similar public place, the advanced technology of 5G mmWave Can provide ultra-large bandwidth support.

Qualcomm Technologies has made 5G mmWave technology a reality and continues to drive adoption of 5G mmWave technology through breakthrough technologies and products. Qualcomm Technologies, in conjunction with leaders in the mobile ecosystem, initiated research into 5G mmWave technology years before relevant standardization work began, followed by interoperability testing in 2017 and 2018, and a release in 2019 The commercialization of 5G millimeter wave has finally been realized in a number of flagship smartphones. In 2020, Qualcomm Technologies also demonstrated 5G mmWave connections with speeds in excess of 5Gbps.

Qualcomm Technologies is committed to bringing ultra-fast 5G mmWave connectivity to the masses and has taken several initiatives to promote this advanced technology, including:

●Currently all levels of Qualcomm Snapdragon? Mobile platforms (from Snapdragon 8 series to 4 series) support 5G mmWave connectivity.

●According to the relevant data of the Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSA), there are currently more than 100 commercial and pre-commercial 5G mmWave terminals, including mobile phones, PCs, mobile hotspots, CPEs and modules; almost all of the above terminals are equipped with the Snapdragon platform .

●5G mobile phones using the Snapdragon platform, covering from flagship terminals to models with prices as low as $400 (about 2,600 yuan).

●Qualcomm Technologies is supporting mobile operators to provide gigabit-class network access to numerous communities using terminals powered by Qualcomm’s 5G Fixed Wireless Access Platform, including extended-range 5G connectivity through high-power millimeter-wave solutions.

● Radio access networks using Qualcomm’s 5G RAN platform, such as small cells, are already running in the operator’s network.

The recently announced Snapdragon X65 modem and RF system will take advantage of new capabilities, such as peak speeds up to 10Gbps, and dual connectivity using mmWave and Sub-6GHz bands to further expand 5G mmWave for improved performance.

Dejia Ma, senior vice president and general manager of 4G/5G business at Qualcomm Technologies, said: “Our modem-to-antenna end-to-end solution brings together all the key 5G breakthrough technologies to leverage the massive bandwidth of mmWave to improve 5G connectivity. All major device manufacturers are providing 5G commercial devices, and we play a key role in supporting the ultra-high speed and extreme capabilities that enable the 5G vision. This not only redefines the smartphone experience, but also paves the way for endless possibilities in many fields This includes enabling the further expansion of 5G into fixed wireless access, 5G enterprise private networks, computing, XR and the Industrial Internet of Things.”

During the Qualcomm 5G Summit on May 19-20, Qualcomm Technologies will further demonstrate how 5G mmWave supports optimal user experience.
