Offering an alternative to red lasers in industrial equipment applications, ams Osram has developed a green laser diode that is said to be brighter, easier to use, and more reliable than red laser diodes in applications such as levelling, scanning, biosciences, and dot projection.
The new PLT5 522EA_Q is an edge-emitting laser with a tightly controlled beam. The device offers a peak output power of 20 mW, at a typical peak emission wavelength of 520 nm and a spectral bandwidth of 2 nm. The laser diode can be used in either continuous wave or pulsed mode.
The PLT5 522EA_Q claims a 4× brighter appearance compared to red laser diodes without sacrificing any of the features of red lasers. The green laser diode has been tested for lifetime and reliability at a maximum operating temperature of 70°C. The device’s lifetime ratings are compatible with the standard requirements of industrial equipment manufacturers, said the company.
Unlike a red laser diode, the PLT5 522EA_Q doesn’t require burn-in. It also includes a photodiode which is often required for eye-safe operation, said ams Osram.
The PLT5 522EA_Q is housed in a hermetically-sealed and grounded TO56 metal can and is compatible with the driver topologies commonly used with red lasers. Samples are available from authorized distributors.
