Buck converter delivers high efficiency

Diodes Inc. has added the AP64060Q a 600-mA synchronous buck converter to its family of automotive-compliant DC/DC converters. The buck converter integrates a 600-mΩ high-side power mosfet and a 300-mΩ low-side power MOSFET for high-efficiency step-down conversion (reaching 90%) in a minimal printed-circuit-board space. The AP64060Q with an input voltage range from 4.5 V to 40 V targets automotive powertrains, infotainment systems, and instrumentation clusters, as well as vehicles’ exterior lighting.

The AP64060Q offers a low quiescent current (IQ), typically only 90 μA, which delivers enhanced light load efficiency, said Diodes. In addition, thanks to the fast switching frequencies (2 MHz), smaller external inductors and Capacitors can be used.

The buck converter incorporates other features that enable further overall component reduction. These include the synchronous rectification, which eliminates the need for an external Schottky diode, and the use of a peak current mode control and built-in loop compensation network.

The device also reduces electromagnetic interference (EMI) thanks to a proprietary gate driver scheme that is said to alleviate switching node ringing without impacting the MOSFET turn-ON and turn-off times. “This mitigates high frequency radiated EMI noise caused by MOSFET switching,” said the company.

The AP64060Q operates over an ambient temperature range of -40°C to 125°C. Protection features include overvoltage protection (OVP), undervoltage lockout (UVLO), and thermal shutdown.
